Stuck in my head

Did you ever have a song stuck in your head? I listen to *a lot* of country music at work and the following lyrics have been stuck in my head for days.

Come on in boy, sit on down and tell me about yourself
So you like my daughter, do you now? Yeah, we think she’s somethin’ else
She’s her daddy’s girl, her momma’s world
She deserves respect, that’s what she’ll get
Now, ain’t it son?
Y’all run along and have some fun
I’ll see you when you get back, bet I’ll be up all night
Still cleanin’ this gun

It’s from Rodney Atkins’ latest album, If You’re Going Through Hell, and it’s a father-daughter tale.

Another knitted wash cloth finished. Pictures later this week and I expect to restart on the little sweater towards the end of the week.

Lemony Snicket

Do you all know Lemony Snicket? Apparently if you have kids of a certain age, you do.

This evening, on ‘All Things Considered’ on NPR, there was a story about author Daniel Handler (better known as Lemony Snicket ) and an album he has put out with songwriter Stephin Merritt containing songs written to accompany the 13 books in author Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” I haven’t read/been read to any of the books, but the music is delightful and I’m seriouly contemplating getting a copy of the CD.

American IV - The Man Comes Around

The Man Comes Around

As I type this, I’m listening to Johnny Cash’s last album. Mostly covers with only three songs by Johnny. Everything from Nine Inch Nails to Paul Simon to Lennon/McCartney.

A fitting last album. The title song is a powerful statement of Johnny’s beliefs and he makes songs like NIN’s ‘Hurt’ and Sting’s ‘I Hung My Head’ more his then their writer’s. Dark and beautiful.

Music lyrics as poetry

My tastes in music are wide ranging. Everything from classical to old timey country to rock and roll. I especially enjoy music from artists who can create an interesting lyric. I’ve got favorites, though some are definately not mainstream.

What started me thinking on this was a Billy Joel song I heard this evening on the way home on an oldies station. I had never heard it before, but the voice was familiar and the lyrics intriguing.

Some people stay far away from the door
If there’s a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by

Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie

An Innocent Man.

Now I need to find the album.

There are other artists that I love for their lyrics,

Like Lyle Lovett

Who keeps on trusting you
When you’ve been cheating
And spending your nights on the town
And who keeps on saying that he still wants you
When you’re through running around
And who keeps on loving you
When you’ve been lying
Saying things ain’t what they seem
God does
But I don’t
God will
But I won’t
And that’s the difference
Between God and me

God Will

And then there’s John Hiatt (Flash plugin required)

Well my daddy he stood at the foot of the stairs
He was calling to me at the time
And I knew even then, I could die for the thoughts
That I kept in the back of my mind

But I dared not to speak
How I felt for my dad
Cause there were no words to define
The ball of confusion, of feelings and stuff
That I kept in the back of my mind

Back of My Mind

At my age, I think I’ve become more interested in the words than the beat.

Northwest Culture

Dinner at one of our favorite brewpubs this evening meant a chance to pick up a copy of Willamette Week, our decidedly alternative weekly Portland newspaper. Always some good articles, such as this one on the 10 big stories that the national media ignored, but I really enjoy reading though the club listings and discover more of the great band names of our local garage bands.

Playing tonight at Ash Street Saloon are BlöödHag - a heavy metal band dressed like substitute teachers, singing songs with lyrics and titles of the great science-fiction authors and preceded by informative lectures about the said authors. Later in the evening Stovokor is on stage. Who would not enjoy heavy metal Klingon. Yah, Baby…

Actually, heavy metal is not my thing, so I think we’ll skip the shows. We popped Honeymoon in Vegas into the CD player and rocked to Elvis covers all the way home. Never saw the movie, but the soundtrack is excellent - well, except for the Amy Grant version of ‘Love Me Tender’.
