Quote
Just because I’m feeling cynical tonight..
Naturally, the common people don’t want war … but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.

Why is the truth referred to as cynical?
Indeed. Thanks for posting this. It does a great job at highlighting the herd mentality and the power of ‘leaders’ and the fact that we are not being vigilant enough.
The quote was a paraphrase. You can see the complete quote here
If you want to be really cynical, draw comparisons between the Reichtagsfire and the Ermächtigungsgesetz and 9/11 and the Patriot Act.
It’s generally assumed that the Nazi party was heavily involved in the Reichtagsfire and was a means to an end — the Ermächtigungsgesetz.
I’m cynical but not enough of a conspiracy theorist to believe that Bush and Company had anything to with 9/11.
I just think George’s handlers took advantage of the moment to make their man appear to be a better leader than he really was.
