Still alive
and still knitting.
Not much of interest in my life right now. We’re short-handed at work right now and that means longer hours, which means a bit larger paycheck, but it also means I’m having less spare time to tend to either of my weblogs. But I am finding time for knitting (mostly on the scarves, but I have been doing a bit of tinking on the circular shawl until I start screaming
) and I’m busy making cookies and other sweets (tomorrow - brownies with York Peppermint Patties buried in the middle).
Also planning on taking some classes at the Oregon Culinary Institute thanks to a pointer from my friend Lisa. Some are a bit over my budget, but some of the fundamentals classes and the knife skills classes have openings and the prices are reasonable. If I wasn’t nearly 60 years old and I had an extra $15,000 I’d *seriously* consider their diploma program.
Tired and I’ve got another busy week facing me, so It’s off to a bath and then bed.

Do you have some GI bill benefits? If you WANT a diploma, you should be able to HAVE a diploma.

I agree….have you thought about talking to them about the financial options?

Ok.. If I had the money available, I’d do it just for the pleasure of learning.
I don’t have the money and my remaining GI benefits would never cover the $15,000. Financial aid *is* an option, but that assumes I’ll be able to pay off the loan.
Now.. I’m nearly 60 years of age and no matter what people say there is age discrimination and there is very little chance of getting a good enough paying job to pay off the loan.
My current employer was nice enough to hire me at Oregon minimum wage and give me pay hikes to $9.50/hour, but that’s not going to pay much (barely keeps me alive now).
So, I’ll continue to dream and take the few classes I can afford and enjoy cooking as a rank amateur.

hi,i just found your site and i am impressed by your knitting. i have knit for 10-12 years, but have not tackled the sort of projects you have. i tend to feel guilty because so many i know do wonderfully complex things. but perhaps these people really thrive on such a challenge. i recently realized that i simply burn myself out with large projects. i need to relax because i am a caregiver to my 24/7 care-needing father (with whom i live) and beginning to become a caregiver to mom, and i work full-time. i also love lace and by cancelling the big projects i want to get back into lace knitting — smaller things. right now i’m relaxing with socks and fingerless mittens and hats and scarves. soon i hope to begin a lace project. it’s been tooooooo long.

Any chance the school has a certificate program as well as a diploma one? Could the classes you take add up to a certificate? I say go for it … take as many classes as you want. Who knows, you might meet some interesting people that way as well as learn new cooking ideas. BTW, I want to try your peppermint brownies. They sound wonderful to me.

You know… I think I’ll ask if I can acquire credits by taking the Saturday classes. In a lot of the cases, the *names* of the classes match those in the regular course.
Whatever happens, it’ll be fun and I’ll learn something new.
And *please* try the brownies. I’m not particularly happy with the way they turned out and I’d like some second opinions.
