Christmas Eve

December 24th, 2004 Jerry No comments

It’s Christmas Eve. Today was Eileen’s Birthday (Christmas Eve birthdays have gotta suck) and we had a nice dinner. Beef roast, potatoes, carrots and salad. Tomorrow we visit Eileen’s father and hopefully my folks over the weekend.

No gifts, as money is too tight, but we’re enjoying the holidays. Life is never quiet with a house full of cats.

I hope everybody has a safe and happy Christmas. Except for weather reports, I’ll be offline until Sunday or Monday.

Sock Scarf 1/2 completed

December 22nd, 2004 Jerry No comments

Finished the toe, picked up stitches and started 2×2 ribbing for second side. I plan on putting a double width (20 rounds instead of the 10 for color changes) to separate the two sides. And it fits.. Quick knitting satisfaction is good… ;-)

Gray Jays

December 21st, 2004 Jerry 3 comments

This time of year we’re busy feeding the birds along with all the other chores around the farm. We’ve got Black Oil sunflower feeders, suet block feeders and a couple flat surface feeders for those that like feeding on the ground.

Our most common visitors are Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Steller’s Jay and Dark-eyed Junco with occasional visits from Varied Thrush, Spotted Towhee and Evening Grosbeak.

The past two days we’ve had new and welcome vistors to our feeders. Gray Jays are unusual at this low altitude, but discussions with birders in my general area leads me to believe that the ‘Camp Robbers’ do come down to lower elevations in the winter if food is available. Just one Gray Jay yesterday, but this morning there were six on the flat feeder eating the cracked corn and sunflower seeds we put out. I’ll have to keep an eye out for returns and hopefully a chance to take a picture.
