Music lyrics as poetry
My tastes in music are wide ranging. Everything from classical to old timey country to rock and roll. I especially enjoy music from artists who can create an interesting lyric. I’ve got favorites, though some are definately not mainstream.
What started me thinking on this was a Billy Joel song I heard this evening on the way home on an oldies station. I had never heard it before, but the voice was familiar and the lyrics intriguing.
Some people stay far away from the door
If there’s a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by
Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie
Now I need to find the album.
There are other artists that I love for their lyrics,
Like Lyle Lovett
Who keeps on trusting you
When you’ve been cheating
And spending your nights on the town
And who keeps on saying that he still wants you
When you’re through running around
And who keeps on loving you
When you’ve been lying
Saying things ain’t what they seem
God does
But I don’t
God will
But I won’t
And that’s the difference
Between God and me
And then there’s John Hiatt (Flash plugin required)
Well my daddy he stood at the foot of the stairs
He was calling to me at the time
And I knew even then, I could die for the thoughts
That I kept in the back of my mind
But I dared not to speak
How I felt for my dad
Cause there were no words to define
The ball of confusion, of feelings and stuff
That I kept in the back of my mind
At my age, I think I’ve become more interested in the words than the beat.

Billy Joel has always been my favorite musical artist, from the time I was 7. All of his lyrics have spoken to me - which is odd when you are 7!

You failed to mention the master lyricists - Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. So many, so little time. Of course, Bob Dylan you have to read the libretto because you can’t understand his slur.

Funny.. We were listening to Paul Simon’s Graceland on the way home tonight and I was thinking to myself, what a great writer he was. And then Ladysmith Black Mambazo doesn’t hurt the album either.

Don’t know if you’ll see this since this post is a week old, but…
Innocent Man is on the album of the same name (from 1983). I’m surprised you hadn’t heard it before! You might be able to find it at a used CD store and pay a little less for it, but it’s probably not too expensive since it’s old.
Your shawl looks beautiful. Hopefully I’ll be able to cruise by again when the finished picture is up.
