When Knitting Was a Manly Art

A good visit with both my Pop and Mom today. Pop is holding up pretty well and Mom wants out of hospital.

I really hate visiting a parent in hospital. They always look so small and fragile. But, Mom is doing well and her Doctor says there is a possiblity she can go home on Sunday. She’s a feisty old lady and she’s determined to get better, though with her heart disease it’s only a matter of time until we go through this again. Her Doctor is talking about implanting a pacemaker, which will help, but it’s just talk so far. She needs to get much stronger before that step is finalized. I’ll check up on the folks on Sunday and phone numbers have been handed out to all.

The stuff part — When we left Salem, it was raining pretty hard, but there was a cloud break behind us and as we drove we saw the most magnificent rainbow seemingly erupt from the ground. An amazing, bright half circle of color. The neatest thing though was that it was a triple rainbow. A bright central band, a less bright outer band of reversed colors above and a *much* fainter band of reversed colors inside. I’ve seem many double rainbows, but this is my first triple. A good omen, maybe?

Can you say Snow? I knew you could…
Snow started at about 11 this morning, just before we left for Salem. It was snowing hard by the time we left and temperature was dropping fast. By the time we got home at a bit past 5:30pm, it was raining hard and temperatures were back up a bit and not a flake in sight. Nearly 3/4″ in the rain guage since this morning.

My Father called this evening to let me know that my Mother is in hospital. She’s been fighting congestive heart problems and this is the second episode this year.

I’m pretty upset because she’s been in hospital since Monday and I just learned about it this evening from a very stressed Father. I’m not upset at my Pop, but at my two brothers – one who lives in Salem with my parents – who couldn’t make the effort to let me know what was going on. We have an unpublished phone number, but Pop has the number and nobody seemed to have had the sense to ask him.

We’re heading for Salem early tomorrow to visit both my Pop and Mom. Pop is 85 and Mom (as she continually reminds me) is 79 (not 80). Both have been having a lot health problems the last couple years and I’m entering that high stress period that everyone has to go through with aging parents. It sounds like she’ll probably be home this weekend and one more health crisis will pass. Not looking forward to the next one.

Another wet and cool day. Again, not a lot of accumulation, but it wasn’t one of more enjoyable days dividing Irises.

Pulled the Son of ARAN out of storage this afternoon (now I need to find those two unused skeins of extra yarn). The Sock Scarf will probably be done in the next week or so and I want to try to figure out where I left off and hopefully be able to start right on it when the scarf is done. I’m actually eager to get back to work on the sweater.

Rainy day. Not a lot of accumulation, but it was wet all day. Dividing and potting up Irises meant I only had to spend half of the day outside, the rest in the greenhouse.

Knitting time has been very short over this holiday season. Still, I’ve been able to find 1/2 to 3/4 hour each morning. 10 or 15 rounds and progress continues slowly.

Our wandering boy, Bruno, on his bird catching perch. He just doesn’t understand why there’s no birds anymore. There were lots before he climbed the post.

Knitting progress has been a bit slow over the holidays, but I’ll post an update picture of the Sock Scarf tomorrow.
