The danger of computers

November 30th, 2004 Jerry 4 comments

I really think that I should be kept away from computers sometimes.

I’ve been trying since about 5pm this evening to upgrade my desktop and it’s been one disaster after the other. The latest was when the CDROM drive I was using decided it couldn’t read disks half way through the install.

I reinserted, I vacuumed, I blew, but nothing made any difference. Now I have a partially installed, non-bootable system. Luckily I have a second CD writer that was usable as an install drive and so…. I started over.

So, once again, no updated shawl pictures. Actually pictures are available, but they’re on a partition on the partially installed system and I can’t get to them right now.

Once again, the tired old Win98SE laptop saves the day. I’m going to keep pushing at this until I get it installed, so it may be a long night.

Stuff

No shawl pictures today after all. Today was house cleaning day and it was a good thing as today’s weather was miserable. Barely above freezing, fog freezing on the trees. Right now it’s raining and freezing on everything. Hopefully the powerlines will hold up.

I mentioned we went to out to McMenamin’s Edgefield. The Brothers McMenamin have managed to create an amazing pub/hotel empire that has some of the funkiest pubs in the Northwest. The have managed to save some of the most interesting buildings in the area and turning them into interesting places to visit.

Edgefield

Edgefield started life in 1911 as the Multnomah Poor Farm and then renamed to Edgefield Manor as a nursing home in 1962. The nursing home closed it’s doors in 1982 and the buildings stood empty until the McMenamin’s purchased the very decrepit buildings and 37 acres of land in 1990. They’ve created an amazing setting with gardens, acres of wine grapes, a small golf course and at least 6 pubs/restaurants.

I’ve discovered a well written, short history on the McMenamin’s and their pubs on the Triple A Magazine site. An interesting read.

Moods – Part II

November 28th, 2004 Jerry 1 comment

Much better mood this evening. A good afternoon and evening with friends out at Edgefield for a little dinner and a bit of live acoustic Blues. A bit of a ways to go (nearly 1 1/2 hours back to home this evening), but it was worth it to get me feeling human again.

Sometimes it’s good to live on a ridge top. The valley has been experiencing days of heavy fog and we’ve had beautiful weather during the same time. Of course that also means it’s 36F in the valley and a bit over 29F up here. Just back in from feeding and it’s bloody cold out there and the ground is crunchy.

Six rows done on the shawl this morning and I expect to post an update picture tomorrow.

This morning’s low was the record for the season and we’ve already surpassed that this evening. It’s going to be a cold night. It’s been clear all day, though the valley has continued to experience thick fog and it was settling in again this evening.

Moods

November 27th, 2004 Jerry 1 comment

In kind of a crappy mood the past couple days. It’s a good thing I had lots of knitting time on Thanksgiving, as not much done over the past two days. We’re sitting between two U-Cut Christmas tree farms and the traffic has been absolutely crazy. Why would anyone cut a tree that’s going to stand for nearly a month or more before it’s taken down.

Hopefully I’ll be in a better mood tomorrow.

Another dry and partly sunny day. It’s actually been a pretty dry November so far. Temperature drops fast after the sun goes down.

Happy Thanksgiving

November 25th, 2004 Jerry 2 comments

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it…

It’s going to be a quiet day for the two of us. I’m roasting a turkey breast, and we’ll have potatoes, dressing and cranberry sauce to join it. Since I’m the cook, that means I’ll also have plenty of knitting time also, so I hope to make good progress on the shawl.
