An uneventful day

I wish…

We expected to get down to Brooks for the ‘Great Oregon Steam Up’, but it wasn’t to be.

We got morning chores done, animals fed and truck loaded and were ready to go by 11:30am. Saturday morning traffic on the Sunset Highway towards Portland was light until a bit past Beaverton when things started clogging up. Both lanes came to a near stop and 20 minutes later we found the reason why. A four car rear-ender in the left lane.

Past that and about 1/2 way to Brooks we discovered we didn’t have our Exhibitor passes, which meant we would have to pay $2 to park and $6 each to get in. We turned around expecting to pick up the passes and head down again. On the return, we discovered the accident was still in place and cars were now backed up over a mile. There are lots of ways around the problem, but enough is enough. Unloaded the truck and found better things to do with our time.

We need to haul the trailer down tomorrow to pick up the John Deere, so one way ot the other we’ll be on the road.

No progress on the Aran today.

More books coming out of boxes that haven’t seen the light of day in over 7 years. This time a couple books of poetry by Baxter Black, former large animal veterinarian and Cowboy Poet. He’s a semi-regular on ‘Morning Edition’ on NPR and one of the best of the cowboy poets.

The Accident

My ol’ friend Wayne had an accident
Seem he’d treated himself to a nip
And came home late with the bottle stashed
In the pocket there on his right hip.

He fumbled around for the house key
‘Cause his wife habitually locked it.
Pushed open the door, slipped on the rug
And the bottle broke in his pocket!

He bit his tounge to stifle a scream!
He could feel the pieces of glass
As they cut throught his pants and underwear
Carving X’s and O’s on his *.

He raced into the bathroom to check it
And proceeded to make his repairs,
Depleting the entire first aid kit.
Then he quietly slipped up the stairs.

Next morning he slept like a baby
‘Till his wife, who was loud as Big Ben,
Shattered his peaceful dreams by saying,
“So, you came home last night drunk again!”

“But, Dear, I…I thought you were sleeping?”
“Yes, I was, but it’s perfectly clear,
I just came up from the downstairs throne
And there’s band aids all over the mirror!”
