This weekend and next weekend are the highlights of the summer of those of us interested in old engines, whether they are tractors, steam traction engines or old gas engines.

The Great Oregon Steam-Up has been going on since the late 1980’s and we’ve been attending with at least one old tractor for the past 8 years. Most of the time, it’s been with the 1956 John Deere 420

And occasionally the 1949 John Deere D. 500 cubic inches divided between two cylinders. No muffler - exhaust stack is straight out of the exhaust manifold. Nicknamed, The Beast. This is a 7,000+ lb tractor and we weren’t able to find anybody to help us move it this year.

Today was spent greasing, cleaning, loading and moving the 420. The rest of this coming weekend will be spent at Antique Powerland in Brooks, Oregon.

A new category added tonight.

I’m cleaning out a storage space that has held a piece of my life for about 7 years.

Mostly old furniture, too many radios and books.

I love books and especially cookbooks. And emerging from boxes that I haven’t looked at for years are my cookbooks. And some of the first I’ve dug out and started to look at again are my cookbooks on Indian cooking. Madhur Jaffrey, Julie Sahni and Yamuna Devi. Surprisingly (to me) they’re mostly Vegetarian, tasty and fairly easy to make.

I’m looking forward to starting to cook Indian again.
