Geek day

Today turned into a geek out day. A couple rounds of the Dubblemossa and then decided to bite the bullet and finalize the upgrade of my Linux desktop. Backed up my home directory, reformatted the hard drive and installed RedHat 9.0. I’d spent the past few days making sure I knew what I needed to do go get things working the way I expected them to and for the most part I’m happy with the results. Also dug out an old monitor out of storage to replace my dying one. Even though the monitor is an old one, it was an easier change than I thought it would be.

Next, I upgraded my blog RSS feed to 2.0. The feed (index.xml) now supplies full posts plus comments instead of the excerpts that are the defaults of the standard MovableType template. I’ve started using an RSS reader for a number of the blogs that I follow and the full feeds have been the most useful.

And finally, I’ve added David Raynes’ little MT application to close comments on old entries. Nearly all the comment spam that I’ve been dealing with have been on entries older than a month and so I’ve closed comments on entries older that 30 days.
