Jerry, the gansey is really looking great. All the hard work is paying off, you should be proud of yourself.

I'm thinking about knitting a gansey from Knitting Traditions. Did you have any trouble with the Channel Island cast-on? Even with pictures on a web site I found, I'm having trouble with the idea of using three strands to cast on.
Re: The Manly Art of Knitting - We stocked this book at the yarn store where I worked in the 70's. (Rumpelstiltskin in Seattle) The patterns I remember from it were a rug knitted with rope using needles made from broom handles, a dog bed, and a saddle blanket. All on the extremely simple side, as if guys weren't smart enough to do complex things, or coordinated enough to knit with anything smaller than rope - the best part of the book really was the cover.

Channel Island cast-on wasn't much more difficult than a long tail cast-on. A bit unfamiliar at first, but after a few stitches, it was pretty straight forward. Makes a nice clean edge.
