I've bought a couple mags, but usually for one pattern. There's very little in them that attracts me, beyond the ads. I agree - what the heck is there of interest to guys in most of the magazines? The occasional sweater. So what do you want to knit or design? Maybe the thinking is there aren't that many guy knitters and the few that there are can knit something for someone else.
