Kitty Nest

Now for something different…

It’s been a dreary, wet, cold and foggy day up here on the ridge top. Spent most of the day outside repotting Colocasia (Taro — Black Magic, Illustris and Red Stem).

For reasons I now don’t remember, we’ve got a large container on the deck filled with straw. Some of the outdoor kitties have taken to sleeping in the nest, especially when the day was like today. As I passed the tub this afternoon I discovered 4 cats huddled together in one very warm looking mass and grabbed my camera for the following shot:

Male knitters - again

What is is about male knitters. Over the past month I’ve received three emails from someone working on a article on male knitters. While I enjoy and appreciate the attention I’m beginning to feel that some folks feel male knitters are some how special, while I see myself as just a person who enjoys a relatively simple craft. I get no where the same attention when I spin. I’m really not that special. I’m probably less concerned about what other people think about me, but other than that I’m not much different than most of the other guys who have crafty hobbies.

OKC: Moebius continues. Actually, I’m making some pretty good progress and one of these days I’ll post a picture again.

Another Brrrr

Another cold night last night, though not as cold the night before. 27F for a low, but no more damage to plants, and some of the plants look better that I had thought. The Tree Peonies actually seem to have survived the cold snap pretty well.

Not a big rush this morning to get things done and so I was able to put about 4 rows on the Moebius. At this rate it’s going to take me August to get it done, but I still love the yarn and the pattern and so I keep plugging on.

Finally my personal, non-knitting blog is now public. It’s going to be geeky, liberal and probably not as popular as my knitting blog, but what the heck. The Old Hippy

Brrrrrrr….

Woke up this morning to a very cold house and 25F on the back porch and a nasty east wind pulling the wind-chill down to about 10 or 15 degrees. Unfortunately, our plants were getting used to the warmer weather and this cold snap is going to do some damage. Already we’re seeing leaf die off on our nursery stock of Gunnera and my Tree Peonies are showing leaf burn on the fresh leaves. Sigh… Don’t think it’s going to kill anything, but it’s definately going to set some of the plants back.

Spent the morning breaking ice in watering troughs. Luckily, I had gotten everybody’s water filled in the past couple of days. We heat with wood, and I’ve had a fire going hard all day just to keep the house warm. Supposed to be a *bit* warmer this evening, but I’ll make sure the stove is full before I go to bed.

OKC: Not much to report today. The weather kind of put a crimp in any extra time I usually have in the morning..

Knitting Magazines

Rant mode = on;

Ok, I know I’m a guy, but…..

Even before I stopped knitting two years ago, I was finding the knitting magazines not of much interest to me. In the past, I could always find something of interest in Knitters or in Interweave Knits. Maybe even a whole issue of interesting stuff. I’ve still got a pile of Knitters from the mid 90’s that are full of patterns and Ideas I intend to get back to.

This evening I took a look at the latest editions of Vogue Knitting and Interweave Knits. Not a single pattern of interest (well, OK.. There was a shawl/scarf that looked interesting). I realize that the magazines are writing to mainly a female audience, but there must be somebody out there with an interest in something other than ‘cute little sweaters’? And most ain’t that cute anyway…

Rant mode = off;

OKC: 5 more rows on the Moebius done this morning. Nothing tonight.

Saturday update

A quick update at the beginning of what will be a busy day.

Moebius continues. I’ve knit about 5 or 6 rows since last update. Haven’t touched the Zigzag washcloth (again), but I did rip out the slip stitch cloth. That actually felt good.

This is a farm cleanup day. I’ve got a pile of junk that needs to get to the dump and so the pickup gets loaded and I get to spend the morning at the transfer station. Doesn’t that sound like fun?..

Personal blog is finally running, but I’m not ready to make it public yet.

Another day on the farm

Another wet and cold day on Pumpkin Ridge. A young friend showed up at 9am this morning to help me clean out a much ignored horse barn. Luckily the John Deere 420 was up to the task and three hours later we got the barn done. Both with aching backs and cold bodies. A mug of Jasmine green tea and I was back out to help Eileen finish her nursery projects. Ah, the country life…

OKC: Restarted the Moebius this morning. I really like this stuff. The Moebius is a bit too feminine for me, but I’m really tempted to buy some more Qiviut for a nice scarf for myself. I will continue on the Moebius for now. I’ve got two washcloths already finished and the Zigzag is close enough that I should be able to finish it with occasional evenings working at it. The slip stitch cloth is really close to being ripped out. I dislike the yarn, I dislike the patterrn and I’m thinking it’s not worth the effort.

Feeling better

Picked up needles for the first time in nearly three days this morning. Put about 4 rows on the Zigzag lace washcloth. I’m going to restart on the Moebius tomorrow. Poor thing is looking so lonely lying there on the bookcase.

Had to leave early for another nursery run to picked up bare root water lilies and other marginals and spent the rest of the afternoon wet and cold planting the lilies. When both of our hands were too numb to continue, we finished for the day.

On the lack of knitting front

I haven’t picked up a needle in over two days. I’ve been down with some kind of creeping crud and just don’t have the energy or concentration. Not feeling much better today and it’s a wet and chilly day here in the Pacific Northwest.
